5 Thanksgiving Facts To Share At The Table This Year

Thanksgiving, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, is a wonderful time of the year. (Christmas may try and say otherwise.) It doesn’t get better than expressing gratitude and appreciation for all we have in our lives, getting together with friends and family, and stuffing ourselves with good food and drinks.

This Thanksgiving, take a moment to reflect on all of your blessings and everything you are thankful for. While you’re giving thanks, here are some Thanksgiving facts you can share at the table this year:
1.
The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 as a three-day harvest festival with 50 pilgrims and 80 Wampanoag Native Americans.
2.
The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held in 1924. It featured live elephants, monkeys, bears, and camels from Central Park Zoo.

3.
In 1863 Sarah Josepha Hale, the author of the song “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, convinced President Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. It took her 20 years of campaigning to five separate Presidents.

4.
George H. W. Bush became the first president, in 1989, to pardon a turkey after observing how uneasy the bird was during the Thanksgiving proclamation. The tradition of pardoning a turkey was carried on by every president who took office following George H. W. Bush.
5.
Plumbers have a very, very busy day on Black Friday, but not for shopping! The Rotor-Rooter reports that the day after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days for plumbers because of backed-up sewers, clogged drains, and malfunctioning garbage disposals.

Giving thanks and being thankful, that’s what this special day is dedicated to each year. We’re especially thankful for our broker and agency partners and for their continued support, loyalty and business each year.

We hope you and your loved ones have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!
