Coronavirus Rumors Debunked

As the fear of Coronavirus spreads, unfortunately, so do the rumors.  The outbreak of the novel coronavirus has created immense panic and uncertainty. Before passing on any rumor, take the time to verify it. Get your information from trusted sources like coronavirus.gov or your state and local government’s official websites.

According to FEMA.gov here are a few popular rumors regarding COVID-19 currently circulating:

RUMOR:  There is a national lockdown and there will be a national, two-week quarantine.
TRUTH:  For now, there is no national lockdown.  As with all information online, always remember to verify the source.  You can find the latest information regarding COVID-19 at coronavirus.gov.

RUMOR FEMA has deployed military assets.
TRUTH:  No, FEMA does not have military assets. Each state’s governor is responsible for response activities in their state. This includes establishing curfews, deploying the National Guard if needed and any other restrictions or safety measures they deem necessary for the health and welfare of their citizens.

RUMOR You need to stock up on toilet paper and other groceries in case of a national lockdown.
TRUTH:  This is unnecessary at this time. Only buy what your family needs for a week.  Consumer demand has recently been exceptionally high. There has been no disruption in freight flows, but stores need time to restock.

RUMOR The government will be sending $1,000 checks. Where do I sign up?
TRUTH:  The U.S. Government is not mailing checks in response to COVID-19 at this time. If someone reaches out to you about this, it is a scam. Only trust information coming from official sources. There is more information about this scam and other common COVID-19 related scams on the Federal Trade Commission’s website.

RUMOR:  Only those who are over 60 with a pre-existing condition are at risk for COVID-19.
TRUTH:  This may be the worst rumor of them all. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), those at higher risk include older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions. However, symptoms can range from mild to severe with and may have different complications for each individual. No one is immune to this disease.

Again, during a crisis, rumors easily circulate. You can do your part to the stop the spread of such rumors by not believing everything you hear or read, don’t pass along hearsay and seek trusted sources for information to get the facts about the federal (COVID-19) response.
