Military Veterans Holding Flags in Parade

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.” – President Woodrow Wilson on the day he first proclaimed Armistice Day, November 11, 1919.

Congress amended Armistice Day’s name on June 1, 1954, changing it to ‘Veterans Day’ after President Dwight Eisenhower signed a bill on May 26, 1954. The bill was lobbied by an Emporia, Kansas native, Alvin King who had the idea to expand the Armistice Day celebration to honor all veterans, not just those who gave up their lives in World War 1.  They received help from another Emporia native, U.S. Representative Ed Rees who pushed the bill through congress.

Veterans Day in the USA falls on November 11th annually which is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice which occurred in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.  When the Germans signed the armistice, it ended major hostilities of World War I.
