It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.

It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideal, but it is a disaster to have no ideal to capture.

It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no starts to reach for…

-Benjamin Elijah Mays

New Years Eve is traditionally a time for setting new goals for the upcoming year, however it is never too late to come up with a New Years resolution.  Statistics show that 45% of Americans usually make New Years Resolutions.  Of that 45%, only 8% of these Americans are actually successful in achieving their resolution.  Don’t let the statistics scare you away from setting these goals for yourself.  Take a moment and think about what the New Year promises you.  Try to set realistic, short term goals and then turn that goal into a good habit.  An example of this could be, if your resolution is to lose weight, make it a habit to do at least 10 minutes of exercise either in the morning or after work.  Incorporating this small burst of exercise in your daily routine along with the tasks you usually do from day to day such as brushing your teeth or making your bed will make it easier for you to stick to it.

Here are a few tips to picking an attainable New Years Resolution:

  • Stick to one resolution – analyze every resolution you would like to accomplish this year and choose the one that means the most to you at that time.
  • Reward yourself for each small goal attained – studies show positive feedback for any new habit will increase the likelihood you follow through with them.
  • Become accountable for the goals you set – tell your friends or family about your new habit or goal, this will increase the chances of you sticking to it.
  • Take it slow – If your resolution is to be more productive at work, it doesn’t mean you should try to complete every big project you have for the year in the first week back to work.

As much as these yearly resolutions are difficult, they may also be rewarding if you approach them the right way.  Remember, try visualizing your success and take it slow!  Even if you slip up, let it go and get yourself back on track!

We’d love to hear what your New Years resolutions are!
