Here are a few facts about President’s day…
- It’s not officially called “President’s Day”. The holiday which is celebrated on the third Monday in February annually is actually designated in the US as Washington’s Birthday. There was an attempt to change the name in 1968 to “President’s Day”, however this was never passed.
- Washington’s Birthday was first officially celebrated as a federal holiday when Chester Arthur signed the bill in 1885. Congress passed the bill in honor of George Washington being the first President of the United States.
- This holiday is traditionally celebrated with desserts made with Cherries relating it to the fictional story that “Washington would not tell a lie when asked to cut do a cherry tree”.
- Almost every year since 1888 on February 22nd (Washington’s actual birthday), Washington’s Farwell Address has been read in the US Senate.
