Do you have “Good Work Ethic”?

Work ethic is defined as “a set of values based on hard work and diligence.  It is also a belief in a moral benefit of work and its ability to enhance character” according to Wikipedia.org.  Workers who exhibit good ethic in theory should be the ones selected for the promotion and given more responsibilities.  Hard work is admirable.  Taking shortcuts is not the same as being efficient and working hard.  Being efficient is finding a way to do your work diligently and correctly.  Taking a shortcut because it works in the moment does not mean it is the correct way of doing things and may end up causing you more headaches down the road.

Here are a few techniques to help you build a reliable work ethic…

  • Try setting a time frame to work on different tasks.  Set aside at least 60 minutes to work on a particular task and do not allow any outside distractions.
  • Figure out how long you work effectively at a given period of time before you slow down or allow yourself to get distracted.  This will give you a starting point to improve your effective work periods.
  • Implement a “do it now” habit.  If you simply begin working on a project you aren’t looking forward to, you might find yourself getting a lot more done than if you allow yourself to procrastinate.  The task might not be as bad or involved as it seems.
  • Put your phone away and your email away message on.  The term ‘out of sight, out of mind’ really does come in handy when trying to avoid distractions.

Try implementing at least one of these techniques on a daily basis and you may be surprised as to what you can accomplish.
