We all know that it is essential to have a snow emergency kit for your home in case of severe winter weather.  It is now time to focus on your vehicle and how to be properly prepared in the event that you get stranded in your car in the middle of a snow storm!

Your vehicle snow emergency kit will differ slightly compared to the kit you keep at home.  Keep in mind you will have significantly less room to work with in terms of how much ‘stuff’ you can keep in this kit.  Think about your driving patterns and prepare for the worst.

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe during the storm.

• If you know a possible storm is headed your way, make sure to get your vehicle serviced prior to its arrival.
• Fill up on gas! (And consider keeping an extra gas can filled with gas in your trunk just in case)
• Make sure to have an Ice Scraper (preferably one with a snow brush attached!)
• Keep a warm blanket in your car.
• Don’t forget a car charger for your cell phone.
• Have bottles of water ready for the storm. Staying hydrated is very important.
• Focus on packing calorie-dense, non-perishable foods such as energy bars, nuts and dried fruit.
• Keep a flashlight in your car as a way to signal for help in the event that your car veers off the road and into a ditch. If you drive a light colored car and it is snowing heavily, it could be very hard for people to notice your car lying in a ditch!
• Keep hand and foot warmers in your car.
• It’s always helpful to have a snow shovel in your trunk.
• Stash some sand or a bag of salt in your trunk just in case you get stuck.

You should always plan for the worst.  When creating your vehicle snow emergency kit, plan to be stranded in your car for at least a day to ensure you are prepared with adequate supplies.
