Social Media has proven itself to be a great marketing tool for small businesses, if used properly.  Too often small businesses find themselves committing social media suicide without even knowing it.  Here are a few tips to help your small business get the most out of it’s social media campaign…

1. Avoid posting boring content – a major criticism of social media is that it is a constant flow of useless information.  Try creating a unique perspective with useful and entertaining information for your audience to relate to.
2. Have a strategy – Even if you have a potential audience you shouldn’t begin your social media venture without a plan.  You should be aware of who your target audience is, what information you want to provide them with and how often you’d like to get that information to them.
3. Tweet, Tweet, Tweet – or post status updates as much as possible.  Staying active is important once you’ve decided to involve your business in the social media world.  Social media is about building relationships with your audience, which you can’t do unless you are present on the social media platforms.
4. Pick one, two (possibly three) Social Media Channels – and stick to them.  Figure out which social media sites will work best for your business and work on building those.  You don’t have to join every new social media site out there, especially if your target audience is never going to see anything you post on them.
5. Don’t use it to oversell yourself or your product – Social Media is a tool to help you form relationships with your audience.  Email blasts, print ads and other traditional marketing tools are there to actually SELL your product – do not confuse the two.  Although social media is a selling tool, if you push your product too hard, people will become disengaged and you will end up losing followers on your social media sites.
