If you spend a majority of your day sitting behind a desk you may find it challenging to find different ways to stay active throughout the day. There are many different techniques you can use to incorporate minimal exercise into your daily routine. The key is to find fitness tips that can realistically be added to your workday without having to change into gym clothes.
- Move during your lunch break – try to make it a habit to get up and walk around during your lunch break. Consider taking 30 minutes to eat and 30 minutes to walk during your lunch hour. You’ll be surprised how good you feel when you get back to your desk!
- Take the stairs – use the stairs instead of the elevator. Also, don’t save yourself trips up and down the stairs. If you have to run files downstairs and then you have to use the postage machine, don’t do it all at once. Any excuse you can find to get up and move throughout your work day is a great way to stay active.
- Trade your office chair for an Ergonomic Balance Ball Chair (as long as you can safely balance on it – see example below) – this can help improve your balance and tone your core muscles while sitting at your desk.
(This particular model can be found at Target)
- Shake up your commute – if you have the ability, walk or bike to work rather than driving. If you utilize the bus or train for your commute, try getting off a few blocks away from your office and walk the rest of the way.
- To stretch your back and strengthen your biceps, place your hands on the desk and hang on. Slowly push your chair back until your head is between your arms and you’re looking at the floor. Then slowly pull yourself back in. Do 15 reps.
These days it seems as though everyone is working longer hours and it’s becoming harder and harder to squeeze in trips to the gym. Although these are all very productive ways to incorporate a little bit of exercise into your day, you should still try to find time for a consistent exercise regimen. If you’re feeling extra-ambitious and cannot find time for the gym, you could request a Tread Desk like the one pictured below, although it is not guaranteed that your proposal will be approved!
