You’ve Got a First Class Ticket to a Job Burnout…

job burnout

You’ve worked your whole life to land the job of your dreams and now that you’re finally there, nothing is going to stop you from being the best of the best.  You show extreme dedication by coming in early, staying late, working through lunch and even checking your emails from home.  This is great at first because you establish yourself as a dedicated employee and ‘work-a-holic’ so to speak.  But how long can that lifestyle last?

What is a “job burnout” exactly?  David Ballard, PsyD at the American Psychological Association describes it as “an extended period of time where someone experiences exhaustion and a lack of interest in things, resulting in a decline in their job performance.”

Does this sound familiar?  Here are a few additional signs you may be experiencing a ‘burnout’:

  • Exhaustion – this can be emotional, physical or mental.
  • Decline in Job Performance – are you forgetting little details that you normally could remember to do in your sleep?  Is it taking you twice as long to finish a project as normal?
  • You’re just not motivated anymore – do you wake up and dread going to work even though it never bothered you before?
  • You’re experiencing cognitive problems – chronic stress and burnouts usually lead to an inability to focus on tasks or pay attention.
  • Obsessing over work, even when you’re not there – this means you’re unable to separate your personal life from your work which means your work it interfering with your ability to recover from the stresses of your day.

If one or all of these signs apply to you, you may want to consider taking a much needed vacation or even a ‘mental health’ day to regroup.  Keep in mind, while managing individual tasks can be overwhelming; try to view the contribution of each of these tasks to a greater goal.  Keep a list of accomplishments and give yourself credit for things you have gotten done rather than focusing on what you still need to do.
