Do you ever have one of those days where your ‘to-do’ list is a mile long, yet you can’t seem to focus on any of the tasks at hand?  It can be really frustrating when every little distraction can win your attention versus the things you really need to get done.  I was once told that “procrastination is often a reluctance to accept responsibility for the outcome of the task”.  I’ve never looked at it from that point of view, but after thinking about that statement I realized there is a lot of truth to it.

If procrastination is something you find yourself dealing with, below are a few tips to help you overcome this…

• Acknowledge that you’re procrastinating – saying it out loud and acknowledging the problem may help kick start the process.
• Break the task into a few smaller tasks – you may be avoiding the work because the thought of the work may be too overwhelming.  Break it into different parts and work on one part at a time.  Before you know it, you’ll be finished!
• You may need a change of scenery – sometimes your environment may be the driving force behind your procrastination.
• Try telling other’s your goal – Letting others know your goals is a great way to motivate yourself to finish the project that way you have an answer for them the next time they ask you about the progress of the work.
• Realize it’s not going to be perfect on the first try – You may be avoiding a project because you’re worried it won’t be correct.  Remember, it’s called a ‘rough draft’ for a reason.
• Make up your own rewards – tell yourself that if you finish the task at hand, you can treat yourself to something you’ve been wanting or do something you’ve been looking forward to.
