As the temperatures outside rise, the danger of heat related injury & illness also rises. When summer heat waves hit, there are a few tips that Property Managers, their employees and their tenants can practice to help avoid heat related illness and injuries.
- Block the sun – encouraging your property manager clients, their employees and tenants to close their curtains and blinds can reduce the amount of heat that passes into their home or office by as much as 45%, according to the US Department of Energy.
- Eat Light – Try eating a salad for lunch rather than the greasy, fatty hamburger. Salads are light and easier to digest while hamburgers leave you feeling sluggish. Eating fruits and vegetables keep you hydrated and cooler in the high summer heat.
- Stay Hydrated – replacing the moisture you lose while perspiring can help avoid dehydration.
- Change your light bulbs – compact fluorescent bulbs produce nearly 70 percent less heat than standard incandescent bulbs.
- Let your computer take a Nap – Set it to go into low-power “sleep” mode if you are away from it for longer than 10 minutes. This will prevent it from giving off more heat.
