Every year, millions of people celebrate Valentine ’s Day. Most people believe it is just a commercialized holiday to sell more greeting cards, flowers and candy. What these people don’t know is there is an actual story behind why we celebrate Valentine’s day each year…
There are varying opinions of the origin of Valentine’s day, but one thing’s for sure, it is more than just a ‘Hallmark Holiday’. The most common theory about the origination of the holiday is that in the 3rd century, Roman Emperor Claudius II was having trouble maintaining a strong army and recruiting new soldiers. He believed this was because Roman men had such strong attachments to their wives and families. To try to solve this problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. St. Valentine, a Roman priest, realized this was unjust and against Claudius’s orders, preformed secret marriages for the young lovers of Rome. When Claudius discovered what Valentine had been doing, he ordered that he be put to death. While in prison Valentine is said to have befriended the daughter of his Jailer. Legend states that before his execution, he wrote a letter and signed it ‘From Your Valentine’ as a farewell to her. This phrase is still widely used on Valentine’s day. Valentine’s Day is held on February 14th each year to commemorate the death of the martyred Saint Valentine.
Gradually, Valentine’s day has become the special day for exchanging love messages and the date has been marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers, cards and candy. Americans began exchanging hand-made valentine’s in the early 1700’s. By the 1840’s, Ester A Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentine’s cards in America. Today, it is estimated by the Greeting Card Association that 1 billion Valentine’s cards are sent each year.
We all know technology has become a major part of our society today and although Valentine’s Day Cards are traditionally thought of as tangible objects, surprisingly, one in three American’s plan on sending a Valentine’s Day e-card this year.
