With the recent Hurricane and Nor’easter, Building Owners and Property Managers in the Northeast have a lot of cleaning up to do. For those with an immense amount of destruction to their buildings, it may be difficult to figure out where you should begin the clean-up process. Here are a few things to keep in mind for a safe and productive clean-up.
- Do a thorough evaluation of the property to assess the damages.
- Take photos and document damages to submit to insurance carriers.
- Initiate communications with designated personnel and board members in accordance with your disaster plan.
- Be sure to keep the residents informed of any updates on the building if an evacuation was mandatory.
- If there is a community website for the building it is helpful to residents to post notices, photos, links to helpful services and a list of vendors for repairs, etc.
- Just because it looks clean, doesn’t mean it is! Disinfect all areas that were contaminated.
- Schedule a qualified professional to complete an evaluation of the overall HVAC system’s performance.
- Obtain several bids for necessary repairs while consulting with engineers and/or industry experts for guidance regarding the damages.
- Conduct post clean-up inspections.
Recovering from a major storm is not an easy task. Hopefully this information will be valuable when trying to recover from Hurricane Sandy and other disasters that may occur in the future.
