As the weather turns a little bit cooler and property managers begin turning on the heating units in their buildings, it is important to make sure the Carbon Monoxide detectors are checked and are working properly.  Carbon Monoxide or (CO) which is often referred to as the ‘silent killer’ is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas which is produced by the incomplete burning of various fuels.  Carbon Monoxide detectors are designed to measure CO levels and sound an alarm before dangerous levels of CO accumulate in an environment.  This provides people with sufficient warning to safely evacuate the area.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning are similar to those of a Common Flu and can include…

  • Headache and dizziness
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Loss of Judgment
  • Loss of muscle control
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakness
  • Convulsions
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Death within 2 hours if exposed to a .16% or higher concentration level

Common sources of Carbon Monoxide are…

  • Water heaters
  • Clothes dryers
  • Emergency generators
  • Heating appliances
  • Space heaters
  • Motor vehicles running in attached garages
  • Temporary cooking appliances

There are 25 states that have different statutes regarding Carbon Monoxide Detectors.  To check yours or your client’s state’s statute, visit the NCSL website.  Remind your clients that this is an odorless, colorless poison and without a CO detector, it can build up in their home or building without them even knowing!
