Natural disasters such as the wildfires recently wreaking havoc in Colorado serve as horror stories for insurance agents and property managers alike.  While there is no way to predict these occurrences, if your client’s property is located in an area prone to a natural disaster like this, there are precautions that their property managers can take to protect against major losses.

Suggest the following precautions to reduce the risk of fire losses…

  • Have an emergency evacuation plan ready – Knowing where to go and what to bring when a wildfire starts is very important.  Plan several different escape routes in case the original route planned is blocked.
  • If your client’s property is located in a wildfire-prone area, suggest that they clear all combustibles within 30 feet of any structure.
  • Choose Safety glass for windows and sliding glass doors.
  • Rake leaves, dead limbs and twigs when clearing all flammable vegetation.
  • Mow grass regularly.

A wildfire can double in size overnight and destroy everything in its path.  Be sure to review your client’s insurance policy with them, ask if they have a business continuity plan in place and also suggest they update their home and office inventory lists to be sure to include all important contents.
