Did you know, on this day in History……….
You may be familiar with the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon from one of my previous blogs where I mentioned he has been associated with the Fountain of Youth (believed to be in Florida) and also accompanied Columbus on his second voyage to the New World. What you might not know is, on April 2nd 1513 Juan Ponce de Leon landed on the Florida Peninsula and has been widely credited with the discovery of Florida. Although he may not have been the first European to reach the peninsula (there is some evidence that one or more explorers on Spanish slave expeditions may have visited the land first), he is however, rightfully credited for naming it ‘La Florida’ meaning ‘Festival of Flowers’ because it was the Easter season when he first caught a glimpse of the verdant landscape.
