Halloween signifies a time of celebration and superstition.  It originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, in which people would dance around bonfires wearing costumes to ward off any roaming ghosts.  It has since evolved into a community-based event worldwide where the young and old dress up in costumes, hand out candy and celebrate the coming of the winter season.

Safety Tips for Halloween

The Costume

• Have your children try on their costume before Halloween so you have sufficient time to alter if needed.
• Make sure your children wear comfortable shoes.
• Try to avoid allowing your children to carry fake weapons, if they do chose to carry a fake weapon make sure it is flexible and cannot harm anyone.
• Keep your child’s costume and wig away from door handles or fires.

While Carving

• Do not allow young children to carve pumpkins, allow them to draw the faces and then the parents can do the carving.
• Keep candle-lit pumpkins on a sturdy surface away from any plants, curtains or flammable objects.
• Consider using glow-sticks rather than candles to light the pumpkins.

While Trick-Or-Treating

• Be cautious when approaching a stranger in costume.
• Try to stay in groups, do not allow young children to wander off alone.
• Always teach your children to be aware of their surroundings while trick-or-treating.
• Stay on the sidewalks and out of the streets while taking your children trick-or-treating.
• Do not cut across yards or trample through flower beds.
• Review the “stop, drop and roll” procedure in case your child’s costume catches on fire.
• If your child is old enough to go trick-or-treating alone, be sure to remind them to never accept rides from strangers.
• Only visit houses that are well-lit, try to avoid dark houses.

Safety at Home

• If throwing a party, keep an eye on whom you let enter your home.
• If attending a party, familiarize yourself with the exits.
• Make sure to inspect any candy before eating or allowing your children to eat it.
• Avoid consumption of candy that has loose wrappers or seems to be tampered with.

As you begin dressing you and your children up in your costumes and putting up your Halloween decorations, keep these Halloween Safety tips in mind!
