Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 21st. Many people assume that Father’s Day was created as a reaction to Mother’s Day. What most do not realize is that this sentimental holiday was created as a completely unrelated event. Father’s Day has a rich history and interesting facts!
Here are some fun facts you may not know about Father’s Day:
- Father’s Day is Hallmark’s fifth most popular holiday for card sending.
- Most countries around the world celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June.
- President Lyndon Johnson declared that the third Saturday in June would be Father’s Day. In 1972 Richard Nixon made the proclamation an official holiday, however Calvin Coolidge was the first American President to support the concept of a holiday supporting fathers in 1924.
- The first unofficial Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, WA in 1910. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, raised by her widower father was inspired to celebrate her father after hearing a sermon.
- The official flower of Father’s Day is the rose. If your father is alive, you should wear a red rose, while wearing a white one represents a deceased father.
- According to the U.S. Census in 2013, there were 214,000 stay-at-home dads taking care of children while their significant other works outside the home.
- Neckties rank as the most popular gift given to dads.
- It’s believed that the word “Dad” dates back to the sixteenth century.
Whether your father is near or far we are sure he would appreciate a visit (if possible), a phone call or a card. After all, he was the first one to pick you up when you fell down, the first one to check under the bed for monsters, your first best friend and the first person you called your hero. No matter how old you are you’ll always be that little boy or girl to him. We hope all the dads out there have a very happy Father’s Day!
