Memorial Day is many times confused with Veteran’s Day. While both are a day of remembrance, Veteran’s Day is a day to celebrate all who served in the U.S. military, whereas Memorial Day is a day to remember those military personnel who have sacrificed their lives and fallen in battle.
In honor of our fallen heroes, in 2000 Congress passed “The National Moment of Remembrance Act”. At 3pm on Memorial Day all Americans are encouraged to stop whatever they may be doing and pause to silently reflect on the sacrifices made by those fallen soldiers in the armed forces as an act of unity. Many television and radio stations across the country play “Taps” in honor of this moment.
You may be thinking to yourself, how can I pay homage to these heroes?
There are many ways! You can attend a Memorial Day parade or ceremony in your town, visit a local Veteran’s cemetery, participate in the “National Moment of Remembrance”, or simply thank a military family in the neighborhood for their service. You can also choose to fly an American flag. However, what you may not realize is that according to the flag code you are suppose to fly your flag at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day. After noon the flag is fully raised again.
Whether you choose to visit a cemetery and place a flag by a veteran’s grave or you simply attend a festive, as you and your families celebrate Memorial Day weekend take a moment to remember our fallen heroes and give gratitude for the service those courageous men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces made for our freedom.
