Although likability is not a job requirement, it does help in landing (and keeping) your dream job! Your ability to come across to your co-workers as likable is proving to be a huge asset in the workplace. Although it may seem like this is an easy task, it is harder than you think, and may mean making permanent changes to your personality.

Here are a few ways to help ensure your likeablity…

• Keep a Positive Attitude – Having a negative attitude at work can poison your relationships with your coworkers and with people in general. This doesn’t mean you should ignore your hardships or failures. It does mean you shouldn’t dwell on them. Take a page from Elsa of the hit Disney movie, Frozen and “Let it go”.
• Be a Valuable Asset – “The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best.” (Epictetus) Have you ever noticed that successful people often attract and spend time with other successful people? Surrounding yourself with positive people will help move your career in the path you choose for it to go.
• Keep Your Insecurities In Check – Think about what you say before you say it. Remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes and again, try to let it go! Don’t let insecurities hinder your ability to build strong relationships.
• Stop Judging People – Have you ever heard the quote, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”? I’m a strong believer in the thought that you get what you put out there. If you’re constantly judging people and creating boundaries between yourself and your coworkers, you will get the same treatment in return.
• Become a Person of Conviction – If you respect yourself, you will gain the respect of others. People will always try to test you to see exactly what your boundaries are. Being nice to everyone and treating everyone with respect does not mean becoming a pushover in the process. Stand your ground and keep your values and beliefs above all else.

If you listen, communicate well, are trustworthy and earn respect, chances are, you’re likable! And yes, it is hard work, but it’s worth it!
