At the end of your work day do you often have dizziness, a headache, stiff shoulders? If so, it could be attributed to the way you are sitting at your desk. Did you know that one of the biggest advantages of maintaining good posture is it helps give you more energy? Repeating poor posture on a daily basis causes your body’s structure to slowly adapt to it, resulting in misalignment and pain. Sitting hunched over the computer all day is one of the biggest causes for poor posture. There are however, ways to minimize the impact of sitting at a desk for a long period of time and avoiding poor posture.
- Change your screen position – Your computer screens should be below eye level as your eyes naturally gaze downward, but not too far. Be sure not to place is so low that you must bend your neck and dip your shoulders to look at it comfortably. You’re screen position should help keep you sitting straight and tall without straining any muscles.
- Position your body correctly – Your body should be at a 90 degree bend when sitting in your desk chair. Sit so that your torso is in a straight line with your feet flat on the floor. Leaning forward or back will strain your back and can be hard on your spine.
- Is your keyboard position correct? – Again, your arms should be in a 90 degree angle so you can comfortably type without hunching your shoulders.
- Another option could also be a mesh posture support that attaches to the back of your desk chair. These are a lightweight, cost effective way to help correct posture and provide lumbar support to help with back pain.
As you can see there are many ways to ensure posture throughout the day. Sitting at your desk all day does not mean your posture and health have to suffer. Trying to correct your posture while sitting at your desk may feel unnatural at first, but don’t worry, you will adjust quickly!
