‘Father’ is listed in the dictionary as a male person who conceives a child, adopts a child and/or raises a child.  We all know that being a ‘father’ means more than just that.  A father is someone who teaches you how to ride your bike or hit a baseball, coaches your soccer games, picks you up after high-school dances, occasionally embarrasses you in front of your friends, is your biggest cheerleader, walks you down the aisle on your wedding day, and most importantly is someone who you know you’ll always be able to count on for unconditional love and support.

Every year Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June and was created to honor our fathers and the influence of father’s in society.  It was created to complement Mother’s day.  It is a great day to appreciate all of the little things that your father or father figure has done for you throughout the year.  Although there are many individuals attributed for the idea of Father’s Day, Sonora Dodd is given credit for the holiday.  Dodd suggested the holiday after the success of ‘Mother’s Day’.   Dodd wanted to give her father the same respect and praise as he was a Civil War Veteran and a single parent of six children who he raised after his wife passed away.  Father’s Day became a permanent national holiday in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

Like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day is celebrated by giving gifts, cards and even flowers.  One of the most popular gifts to give on Father’s Day is the Necktie.  According to www.infoplease.com, Americans spend more than $1 billion dollars each year to buy a staggering 100 million ties.  Have you ever wondered where the necktie actually came from and why men wear them?  The earliest known version of the ‘necktie’ was actually a silk scarf worn by Croatian Soldiers, which became known as the ‘cravate’.  However, the fashion of wearing such a garment has been linked back as far as 210 BC to the Chinese emperor, Shih Huang Ti.  Ties have been used to declare status, occupation, sometimes even identity, as well as allegiance to a specific group.  They’re purpose is also to protect the neck or hide buttons on a shirt.  Although there are many different types of ties and different meanings behind wearing one, it is a practical gift for father’s day.  If a tie is not the perfect gift for your Dad this father’s day, www.uncommongoods.com has a few unique gift ideas that might be a fun alternative to the commonly given Father’s Day gift.

Regardless of what you get your father this Father’s Day, remember it is a day to spend quality time with your Dad and really express how appreciative you are to have him in your life!

New Empire Group would like to wish all of the Dad’s out there a very Happy Father’s Day!
