Saint Patrick’s Day is widely celebrated throughout the world.  In the US, it seems like on Saint Patrick’s Day, everyone’s Irish for a Day.  It is a holiday established to recognize Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.  It is celebrated with traditions, good food, and spending time with friends and family.

5 Ways you can Enjoy Saint Patrick’s Day

1.)    Learn the history of Saint Patrick’s Day – Saint Patrick was a Romano-Briton Christian Missionary who is recognized as the patron saint of Ireland. At age16, he was captured by Irish raiders and sold into slavery to an Irish Sheep Farmer, where he lived for six years.  He escaped and returned home where he spent the next 12 years in a monastery. In his 30’s he returned to Ireland as a Christian Missionary until his death on March 17, 461 AD.

2.)    Dress the Part – Initially, the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue. The color green is commonly associated with Ireland, which is also known as the “emerald Isle”.  Over the years the color green has slowly made its association with Saint Patrick’s Day. Today, green ribbons and shamrocks are worn in celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day, a tradition which started as early as the 17th century.  Even if you’re not Irish you can still wear a green T-Shirt, pants, jacket and/or accessorize with green hats, buttons, pins, jewelry – there is no such thing as wearing too much green on Saint Patrick’s Day.  If you don’t, you might get pinched!

3.)    Go to a local St. Patrick’s Day Parade – Many small towns hold their own Saint Patrick’s Day parades, but if yours doesn’t, try attending the larger parades held in New York City, Boston, Chicago or San Francisco.

4.)    Eat Traditional Irish Food while Listening to Irish Music – The Funny thing is Corned beef and cabbage is not considered to be a national dish in Ireland.  The connection with the signature dish and Saint Patrick’s Day specifically originates as part of the Irish-American culture. In Ireland, the most closely related traditional dish is bacon and cabbage (which is more like Canadian style bacon or ham). Corned beef and cabbage became popular in the U.S. after Irish immigrants in the northeast used corned beef instead of pork in the dish. Some say this substitution was likely due to the low cost of corned beef in the U.S.  As for the music, almost anywhere you go on Saint Patrick’s Day will be playing traditional Irish music such as Celtic, folk and traditional Irish pub songs that are a sure-fire way to get you in the Saint Patrick’s Day Spirit!
