“The more you are willing to accept responsibility for your actions, the more credibility you will have.” -Brian Koslow
Trust is defined as the reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc. of a person or thing; confidence in them. Do you consider yourself trustworthy? The terms trust and credibility go hand in hand. Earning the reputation of being trustworthy is not an easy task but is an attainable task. Trust is both emotional and logical. When you trust someone emotionally, you expose your vulnerabilities to that person in the belief that they will be honest and not take advantage of you. On the other hand, when you trust someone logically, it is because you have had past experiences with this person and they have proven to you that they are credible and stand by their word.
Being trustworthy will help you in all aspects of your life, not only in the work environment. I often think of the “Golden Rule” when I think about trust. The Golden Rule states, “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself”. Often times, especially in sales, we face people who are only looking out for themselves. Have you ever been lied to or been taken advantaged of? Were you angry, did you feel betrayed? After things like this happen to us, we make an equally emotional and logical decision to distrust that person or company. You’ve also probably spread the word that the company and/or person you dealt with is dishonest or untrustworthy. Being dishonest may benefit you in the short-term, helping you land a sale or get a promotion you did not fully deserve. Always remember though, people are emotional creatures. Once you’ve been labeled as an untrustworthy individual or company, it makes it very difficult to win those customers back.
Trust is earned. If you prove to your clients that you are a reputable company, even if you’re prices are not as competitive as others, you will be more likely to retain their business and earn new clients by referral.
