- 1958 – President Eisenhower signs the National Aeronautics and Space Act
- 1858 – The Treaty of Amity and Commerce (also called Harris Treaty), between the United States and Japan was signed opening the ports of Edo and four other Japanese cities to American trade and granted extraterritoriality to foreigners, among other stipulations.
