• 1981 – Prince Charles marries Lady Diana at a royal ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.  It was estimated that nearly 500 million television viewers in 74 countries tuned in to witness the fairytale marriage.
• 1958 – President Eisenhower signs the National Aeronautics and Space Act
• 1858 – The Treaty of Amity and Commerce (also called Harris Treaty), between the United States and Japan was signed opening the ports of Edo and four other Japanese cities to American trade and granted extraterritoriality to foreigners, among other stipulations.
