Everyone likes the look of tan skin in the summertime. 4th of July weekend is a time where people spend countless hours in the sun hanging out on the beach, laying by the pool, enjoying barbeques, playing outdoor sports or watching parades. As a result, many people end up with a nice tan – and if they’re not careful, damaged skin. In today’s blog, we will be finishing our Summer Safety Series with Safety Tips for Sun Exposure. This is something everyone from infants to the elderly can benefit from.
When spending time outside, remember to…
- Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as the sun’s rays are the strongest between these hours
- Remember to apply sunscreen even on Cloudy days, UVA Rays are not blocked by clouds
- Try to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to going outdoors
- Try to choose sunglasses that are ‘UV Protected’
- Remember commonly missed areas such as the Chin, Scalp, Ears, Nose, Lips and Eyes
- If you plan on being outside for an extended amount of time for activities such as gardening or going for a walk, try to cover most of your skin with clothing, as well as applying sunscreen
- Commonly missed exposures also include the left arm while driving in a car or your head from having the sunroof in your car open so be sure to apply sunscreen to these areas also
- Re-apply your sunscreen! Setting a reminder on your phone every few hours may be a helpful way to prevent sunburns and avoid sun damage!
