The Pool & Spa Safety Act was created after 7-year-old Virginia Graeme Baker drowned when she was trapped under water by the powerful suction from a hot tub drain in 2002. Cases like this can happen in an instant so be sure to follow the proper safety precautions for your Community Association swimming pool.
Pool Safety Tips to Consider for Homeowners, Property Managers and Community Associations:
- Install at least a 4 foot fence or barrier around the water’s edge to keep small children and pets out of danger
- Learn to swim and be sure to teach your children to swim
- Never leave children unattended around pools
- Learn life-saving skills such as CPR
- For Property Managers & Community Associates, always make sure there is a trained lifeguard on duty whenever the pool is open
- Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol around pools
- Always keep life-saving equipment such as life jackets and flotation devices available
