“The peak of the hurricane season is almost upon us and it’s important to remain prepared for hurricanes through November” said Joe Nimmich, FEMA Associate Administrator for Response and Recovery.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently issued an updated Atlantic Hurricane Season outlook and it appears as though it’s going to be an above-normal season. As the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Regions found out last year, it is very important to be prepared for hurricane season, even before a hurricane warning is in the news. According to the most recent hurricane outlook by the NOAA, there is a 70 percent chance of the following happening; 6 to 9 hurricanes (top winds of 74 mph or higher), 3 to 5 of which could be major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of at least 111 mph).
As the Atlantic hurricane season enters its most active phase, be sure to prepare yourself and your clients for any potential storms. Review your client’s coverage before a storm hits to make sure they have the coverage they think they have. Some commonly misunderstood coverage’s that vary greatly from policy to policy are:
- Hurricane/Wind deductibles or exclusions
- Flood/Water damage
- Mold coverage
- Theft

Remind your clients that the Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1st, but the most active portion falls between August 20th and October. It is better to be safe than sorry!
